Swimming Pool Safety Essentials

Having a swimming pool in your back yard is a wonderful thing!  It’s a place to relax and cool off on hot summer days; a place to gather with family and friends for fun in the sun. But it is also a place that can be dangerous if it is not properly equipped with safety features.  Here is a list of swimming pool safety essentials that will help keep your pool safe and fun at the same time:

  • Fencing – Fencing provides a layer of protection for your pool.  It can prevent a small child from entering the pool area unsupervised.  You can find pool fences in a number of different styles and price ranges.  Just be sure that whatever you choose adheres to local building codes and HOA rules before you put it up. • Automatic or Manual Safety Covers – You should have a non-penetrating cover that can completely cover the pool and block access to the water.  All safety covers should meet ASTM F13-46 standard.
  • Alarms – An alarm that emits a loud sound can effectively warn you about potential danger.  Home security features such as door and exit alarms, as well as gate alarms and water level sensors add another layer of safety when you have a swimming pool.
  • Rope and Float Line – A rope and float line strung across the pool let’s swimmers know where the pool goes from shallow to deep.
  • Life Ring & Shepherd’s Crook (Hook) – These are devices that can be used to pull someone from the pool to safety.  Rescue equipment should be placed close to the pool so that it is easily accessible.  Hopefully, you will never have to use it, but be sure to check it periodically to make sure it’s in good condition. • First Aid Kit – Always have a fully stocked first aid kit handy by the pool.  First Aid Kits
  • Toys, Games & Floats – It’s fun to have toys, games and floats for your pool, but they can also be dangerous.  Non-swimmers should never be left in pool using a float or water wings.  And over-sized floats can trap small children underneath.  It’s also important to not leave items sitting around the pool where they can be tripped over.  Put all toys and floats away when done with them.
  • Maintenance Supplies – Any chemicals or cleaners used for the pool should be kept in a locked storage area where children and pets can’t get to them.  Always follow manufacturer guidelines for them.

If you don’t have all these safety essentials, now is the time to get them so you can enjoy your pool to the fullest!
